Neumann Brothers, Inc. Project Manager Selected to ACE Mentoring Board

Monday, September 10, 2012

Des Moines, IA (September 2012) – Neumann Brothers Project Manage Josh Braby was recently appointed to serve a three-year term on the ACE Mentor Program Board of Directors.

“ACE stands for Architecture, Engineering and Construction. It’s a national mentor program organized to promote the construction industry to youth and allow high school students to work with industry professionals,” Braby said. “Sitting on the Board gives me a chance to keep building the program.”

Braby has served on the education/curriculum and fundraising committees for the past five years. He has also served as an industry professional mentor for the past five years. In addition, three years ago he helped implement the construction trades section of the ACE mentor program to try and get more interest in the construction industry career opportunities.

ACE is a mentoring program pairing high school students with design and construction professionals. It is a National Organization in 30 states and has over 80 affiliate locations. The program started in Iowa in January 2006 with one team of five mentors and 17 students. It is primarily a voluntary after school program that meets for 16 weeks and provides an end of year presentation on a given project.

The program starts with an introduction to the ACE disciplines and what each group does. Architects, Engineers and Contractors provide a tutorial to their profession and the students pick which group they’d like to join. The project involves certain criteria for design and performance. Throughout the 16 sessions, students are able to interact with each other and see how all parts of the construction industry must work together to create a building design. The students are able to utilize what’s learned in the classroom and apply it to real-life tasks construction professionals face every day.

Students can then apply for scholarships which ACE awards at the end of the year. This not only helps give them the motivation to succeed but assistance in doing so.

“Our industry needs young people to get excited about ACE professions,” Braby said. “The ACE mentoring program highlights our industry and really lets students learn hands on from professionals.”

Going forward, Braby will sit on the ACE Mentoring Board of Directors for a three-year term.
