Cedar Rapids Veterans Memorial Restoration Project Reaches Completion

Thursday, January 30, 2014

DES MOINES, Iowa – Neumann Brothers, Inc. nears completion of the Veterans Memorial flood damage and restoration project in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Neumann Brothers served as construction manager for the three-phase project. Damaged by monumental floods in 2008, the project restored the historic 110,000 square foot building back to its original design. Located on Mays Island, the Veterans Memorial Building is known locally as the heart of the city and is a central gathering place for veterans and members of the community.

Neumann Brothers’ key roles on the project included flood recovery funding assistance, FEMA mitigation planning, budgeting, pre-construction services, and construction management services throughout all phases of construction.

The eight-story building was renovated into a variety of spaces. Existing office and office storage spaces were transformed into a restaurant, bar, ballroom kitchen, and conference rooms. Other parts of the building were constructed for communal healing for Veterans including therapy spaces, activity space, and two gymnasiums. The existing 2,500 seat auditorium, stage, and dressing rooms were restored back to their original intent. The buildings mechanical and electrical systems were replaced and upgraded with new equipment. The mechanical and electrical rooms were relocated within the building in order to raise all critical equipment out of the 100 year flood plain. The flood damaged exterior of the building was also repaired along with Mays Island Parkade.

“It’s been exciting working through pre-construction, design development and now seeing the finish product come together to become a great facility for the community, veterans, and veteran organizations throughout the country,” said Project Manager Josh Braby. “Our team experienced many challenges throughout this project and was able to work through adversity with constant clear communication, leadership, and drive to provide the Owner with a quality product. I’m very proud to have been able to be a part of this project team and project. It’s not just a building it’s a museum and home for many of our veterans who help protect this country.”
