Project Description:

This design-build project involved converting a 22,000-square-foot movie theater complex into a landmark downtown elementary school for the Des Moines Public School district. The project created 11 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, administrative spaces, and a public meeting room. An existing projection room was converted into an observation area for staff and visitors, and a spiraled staircase was maintained for creative student use. Large insulated windows added natural lighting to the building. All facilities are ADA compliant and handicap accessible.

Neumann's renovation concept and budget was 43% below the proposed budget offered by the school district's independent consultant. The project received the 2003 Design-Build Institute of America Award for Adaptive Re-Use/Renovation.
