our history
When passersby look down any street in downtown Des Moines, chances are they will encounter a building that has been touched by Neumann Brothers, Inc. Through innovation, quality craftsmanship and dedication to detail, this award-winning building/contracting firm has not only helped shape Des Moines’ skyline, but also completed numerous projects throughout Central Iowa.
In 1912, Arthur H. Neumann began what was to become a family-run business filled with values that would be passed on throughout the company’s history. Arthur’s three brothersWalter, Harold and Oscarjoined the firm in 1932 and the company incorporated. Although Neumann Brothers, Inc. is no longer strictly family-run; the founding fathers’ tradition of personal commitment, pride and integrity remains intact.
This first generation of builders saw to fruition such projects as Childs Hall at Des Moines College, the Equitable BuildingIowa’s first skyscraper and the tallest building from Chicago to Denver for many years -- , Veterans Memorial Auditorium and Memorial Union at Iowa State University.
The next generation of Neumann builders followed in their footsteps to continue the building tradition. Their projects once again enhanced the Des Moines skyline with such noteworthy structures as American Republic Insurance, Ruan Center, Marriott Hotel, and the Botanical Center.
Today’s staff includes a combination of third-generation Neumanns and non-family members whose construction credits include Employers Mutual Casualty, Meredith Corporation, Iowa State Capitol Restoration, Judicial Building, Grinnell College Residence Halls, the new Science Center of Iowa, and Des Moines University Student Education Center. Collectively, the group is setting trends with their award-winning projects that continue to transform the shape of Des Moines.
