our history

When passersby look down any street in downtown Des Moines, chances are they will encounter a building that has been touched by Neumann Brothers, Inc.  Through innovation, quality craftsmanship and dedication to detail, this award-winning building/contracting firm has not only helped shape Des Moines’ skyline, but also completed numerous projects throughout Central Iowa.

In 1912, Arthur H. Neumann began what was to become a family-run business filled with values that would be passed on throughout the company’s history. Arthur’s three brothers—Walter, Harold and Oscar—joined the firm in 1932 and the company incorporated.  Although Neumann Brothers, Inc. is no longer strictly family-run; the founding fathers’ tradition of personal commitment, pride and integrity remains intact.

This first generation of builders saw to fruition such projects as Childs Hall at Des Moines College, the Equitable Building—Iowa’s first skyscraper and the tallest building from Chicago to Denver for many years -- , Veterans Memorial Auditorium and Memorial Union at Iowa State University.

The next generation of Neumann builders followed in their footsteps to continue the building tradition. Their projects once again enhanced the Des Moines skyline with such noteworthy structures as  American Republic Insurance, Ruan Center, Marriott Hotel, and the Botanical Center.

Today’s staff includes a combination of third-generation Neumanns and non-family members whose construction credits include Employers Mutual Casualty, Meredith Corporation, Iowa State Capitol Restoration, Judicial Building, Grinnell College Residence Halls, the new Science Center of Iowa, and Des Moines University Student Education Center.  Collectively, the group is setting trends with their award-winning projects that continue to transform the shape of Des Moines.

Our Customers

“Everyone we worked with at Neumann, most notably the project director and the site superintendent, were extremely professional, a pleasure to work with, and always acted in the best interest of the university.  Due to their efforts and the work of the construction trades who were involved in the project, we have a facility that is the centerpiece of our campus, and was completed within budget and ahead of schedule.  We are extremely proud of our Student Education Center, and Neumann Brothers should be equally proud of the job they did.”

Steve Dengle
Des Moines University

“Neumann has done a superb job on the construction of the new Science Center of Iowa.  With three unique theaters, food service, retail and seven experience platforms, it is a complex building.  Neumann’s responsiveness and team building approach ensured collaboration among all project team members to bring the best possible facility forward for Iowa.”

Mary Sellers
Science Ctr of Iowa

“We faced many challenges (with the Grinnell College Residence Halls project).  Through it all, Neumann Brothers hung in there and met all the challenges with a positive, can-do attitude, which is greatly appreciated.  (Neumann) should take great pride in what we have accomplished and in so short an amount of time.  It was a pleasure working with the team from Neumann Brothers.”
