In the heart of downtown Decorah, Iowa, this 17,200 square foot historical restoration project celebrated the grand re-opening of the Steyer Opera House. Built in 1870, the opera house had been closed for several decades. Restoring the building to its original Victorian elegance included: replacing windows that featured historical elements, replacing all decorative steel ceiling and wall panels with custom-made pieces that replicated original materials, restoring masonry work, renovating the staircase and railing, and restoring original woodwork details. Stage backdrop screens were also restored to their original condition. Updates to the building included complete mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and finish work for the conference space. The project included administering Historical Tax Credits.
