Intern Spotlight: Katelyn Adams

Neumann Brothers is proud to re-introduce Katelyn Adams! Katelyn has been involved with Neumann for three years through co-op and internship programs. She is currently pursuing her degree in Construction Engineering at Iowa State University and will graduate this upcoming Spring of 2023.

Growing up on her family’s farm in Iowa, Katelyn was always busy working on a new project. She loved learning alongside her dad while they built sheds, laid concrete, and re-roofed buildings. In high school, Katelyn was introduced to the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentorship Program led by Neumann’s Business Development Manager, Josh Braby. Through the ACE Program, Katelyn helped design and build a tiny home for the Joppa Project. This local non-profit organization helps provides housing, education, and various resources to the homeless.

Katelyn’s passion for construction continued into her college years at Iowa State University. While a full-time student, she is actively involved with ISU’s Associated General Contractors (AGC) group, a mentor for Young Women in Construction Camp, and a Teacher’s Assistant (TA). She decided to return to Neumann because of the people and the projects. “I love the people, and I also love the projects Neumann does,” Katelyn shares. “Historic buildings are a big passion of mine, and the historical aspect is appreciated by everyone at Neumann as well.”

This summer, Katelyn worked on the downtown Ruan Center project and enjoyed learning the management process from start to finish. She had the opportunity to dive deeper into estimating. “Before this year, I had little exposure to estimating. Learning about something new, testing my knowledge, and putting together estimates for the project manager was a great experience.” She also shares a fond memory of a pizza party with the Ruan team and Neumann Superintendent Tom Moore.

Katelyn is planning to stay in the Des Moines area after graduation and work towards her goal of becoming a Project Manager. “I’ll start as a Project Engineer,” she shares, “and work my way up!” When asked if she has any advice for a student interested in construction, she says, “100% go for it! You will meet some of the best people you can ever meet in the construction industry and always learn something new. It’s a great career choice.”

In her free time, Katelyn enjoys boating with her friends and having fun wakeboarding on the water in her free time. She is also a talented woodworker!

The entire Neumann team is proud of Katelyn’s growth and accomplishments over the past few years. We’re looking forward to watching her continue to find success after graduation and into her professional career.
